Directorate of Industries, West Bengal

The Directorate of Industries was set up way back in 1917. This Directorate plays a vital role in planning, development & promotion of Industries in the State. The Directorate was set up primarily as a technical wing of the then Commerce & Industries Department. However, in the 1990s, with the abolition of 'industrial licensing' system in general by the Government of India, the technical role has been superseded by a promotional role.

Functions:
• Promotion of Industries.
• Issue registration certificates under Incentive Schemes.
• Assist/guide the entrepreneurs in setting up Industries.
• Study & monitor growth in specific Industries.
• Compilation of data and statistics on various parameters to measure growth in investment, growth in employment, growth in specific Industries, growth of Industrial Sector, etc.

Industrial Research Laboratory (IRL)

• IRL was established in 1919 on Canal South Road, Tangra, mainly as a research house for chemicals and soaps. It started technical training in manufacturing of soap, ink, paper adhesive etc. from 1939.
• It conducts one UG Certificate Course and one PG Certificate Course in Paint & Varnish Technology, both of 2 years duration.
• Both the courses of academic session 2018-2020 and 2019-2021 are running.

Government Industrial & Commercial Museum (GICM)

Established in 1930 at College Street by Calcutta Municipal Corporation, as 'Bangiya Shilpa Bhandar', it was taken over by the State Govt. and shifted to C.R. Avenue.
The museum has a rare collection of artifacts, tools, equipment, chemicals, traditional Bengal sarees and even a collection of about 3000 books. Some of the artifacts were donated by famous personalities. Students of Museology often visit this Museum.
